Hartlepool Sixth Form College students recently embarked on a trip to Iceland where they were able to see geology and geography in action.
The second year Geography students visited Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano which erupted in 2010, and the iconic Sólheimajökull glacier as well as the Skogafoss, Seljalandfoss and Gullfoss waterfalls, the black sand beach and basalt cliffs at Reynisffjarna, the Seltun hot springs, Geysir geyser and Thingvellir National Park.
On the final evening, the students met with the British Ambassador to Iceland, Bryony Mathew, at her official residence and Una Vidarsdottir, a senior advisor to the Icelandic government on Higher Education, Science, and Innovation.
The students discussed their future plans and learned more about the opportunities to study in Iceland through scholarships, or work in the Foreign Office.
Nick Blackwood, Biology teacher at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, said: “The trip was an amazing, once in a lifetime experience for the students, and staff too.
“Iceland is a beautiful country and we saw the best of it, with clear skies and well below freezing temperatures.
“Meeting the British Ambassador and Una Vidarsdottir about progression and future opportunities was a wonderful opportunity for the students as well as myself as I was in the same research group as them when studying my PhD at university.”
