Film studies students from Hartlepool Sixth Form were given the opportunity to learn from renowned film makers at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

Attending screenings from graduates and professionals around York, the group also engaged in workshops designed to motivate and inspire them into exploring the rich and diverse range of storytelling opportunities available.

The students were tasked with researching and planning their own short film before the festival, which takes place annually in November and celebrates independent film from around the world.

English literature and music student, Nathan, said: “I really enjoyed the festival. I felt like it helped me understand a lot more of the terminology from my course as the films are made with an actual purpose and not just blockbusters. It gave me plenty of ideas for my coursework.”

Carl Percival, Tutor of Film and Media, added: “Our students always enjoy visiting the festival in York, watching the short films and taking part in the workshops.

“It is great to hear their conversations continue in the classrooms and see how the Aesthetica Short Film Festival has influenced their coursework.”
