Media and Creative Media students at Hartlepool Sixth Form got the chance to broadcast their own radio show as part of Spark FM’s 10th birthday celebrations.
To mark the impressive anniversary, the University of Sunderland student station took radio ‘on the road’ to a number of schools and colleges across the North East.
As part of the work shop, sixth form students had to research, produce and broadcast their own hour–long live show guided by university teaching staff, selecting music tracks and discuss a range of topics which would appeal to the target audience.
BTEC Media Studies student, Jasmine, said: “I really enjoyed the workshop and loved getting the chance to talk on the radio which has helped me gain confidence speaking to more people.”
Aimee, who is studying A-Level Media, added: “I enjoyed taking part in the session and working with the university staff which gave me an insight into radio and the different roles in the industry and future career opportunities available.”
The sixth form hopes to arrange future workshops at the David Puttnam Media Centre, based at the university’s St Peter’s Campus, focusing on TV and journalism.
Sally Taylor, Film and Media tutor, said: “The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience live broadcast radio which involved researching, producing and broadcasting their own radio show live on air.
“We wanted students them to develop their confidence as well as valuable employability skills such as working collaboratively, creative thinking, time management and communication skills.“
