Having a love of sport, studying Sport & Exercise Science at Hartlepool Sixth Form was an easy decision for Brooke. She has now progressed onto a degree at Teesside University and hopes to work with young people with SEND in the future.
Level 3 Sport & Exercise Science.
I enjoy doing sport so it was an easy decision.
I visited other colleges and decided Hartlepool Sixth Form was definitely better suited for me and already knowing people there made the decision easier.
The best thing about the course was definitely the atmosphere everyone just got along really well and it was always a laugh.
The best thing for me was that the teachers would always go out of their way to help you or make sure you were okay.
They we’re also very understanding if I struggled to meet deadlines.
There was always a good atmosphere in and around college with both teachers and students.
I benefitted most from the situations where I was pushed out of my comfort zone. For example, work experience in a school gave me an insight to what it’s like as a teacher and has prepared me for second and third year at university on placement in a school for a long period of time.
Another thing I have benefited from would definitely be the voluntary work as a university degree isn’t enough to make you stand out, it’s what you have alongside that. Luckily I went into university with some sort of voluntary work especially the SEND event because that’s the route I’d like to take.
Something that inspired me the most was my week on work experience in a primary school. Before then I didn’t really know what I wanted to do but I really enjoyed it and that helped me decide id like to go down that route.
The best advice I was given at sixth form was to make a time table to follow during lockdown and slowly chip away at tasks focusing on one thing at a time.
This was the best advice for me because I had a long list of things to do and looking at it was quite overwhelming but it helped me manage my time a lot better and get everything done.
I would 100% recommend the sixth form, I wouldn’t have gone anywhere else. The advice I would give to someone would be to take advantage of the opportunities especially the ones you don’t feel comfortable doing.
I am currently in my first year at Teesside University studying Sport and Exercise Science while working part time at JD sports.
